Update v0.6 devlog

After another week of development, Lazer Maze has reached version v0.6! There wasn't a version number before, but I consider last week's build to be v0.5, so some decent changes were made. Here are most of them:

  • The host can now select how many points it takes to win, between 1 and 9. Singleplayer remains at 5 points for now
  • A check for version when connecting to a multiplayer match. You won't be able to join if you don't use the same version as your opponent.
  • There's a fun new animated background in both gamemodes that you'll either be entranced by or simply distracted by!
  • There is one new puzzle that was added: the square. It has a one in five chance to appear in any level.
  • Gamepad/controller support
  • A rewrite of the entire UI system (previously used the legacy Unity GUI code)
  • Menu navigation (arrow keys or joystick). You still need to use a keyboard to enter text, such as an ip address.
  • A few moderate performance fixes

For future reference, here is the minimum list of changes I expect to make before the next build:

  • Additional puzzle types that require different solutions
  • Local 1v1 games (requires at least one controller)
  • A restructuring of the maze generation code to reduce network wait times (and prepare for eventual hand crafted puzzles)

I would also like to note that I am taking a short break to work on a separate game for a game jam, so this is it for August. Expect the next build to be published in September!
